JOB SUMMARY

This role at DUDES Club Society (DCS) will be responsible for building good relationships with, and supporting our existing partner communities around British Columbia. The OW is responsible for communicating well on a personal, community, and partner level, and also providing appropriate information so that the DCS communications team can properly share the good news. The OW will be the primary point of contact between DCS and our BC community sites, and is expected to maintain clear and good communication with Health Directors, facilitators, and elders, among other key community leaders.

The OW will work closely with Teka Everstz, National Coordinator; Jason Fitzpatrick, Program Coordinator; Kanatiio, Outreach Coordinator, and Terrace Desonie, Outreach Worker, and will report directly to Frank Cohn, Director and Sandy Lambert, Elder & External Liaison. Decision-making at DCS is done collaboratively, on a management level, and also on a community level, with local partner organizations, and local facilitators/champions and local elders.

This position has been dedicated for 20 hours per week. Work hours will fluctuate depending on program travel and deadlines, with approximately one trip each 2 months when safe.

WORK PERFORMED

  • Support indigenous men’s wellness and community wellness
  • Build relationships and connections and conversations one to one, or in small or large groups. In person and/or online.
  • Participate in Monthly facilitator calls, weekly team meetings, weekly men’s talking circles, partner meetings as they arise, and attend DC Gatherings in Vancouver or elsewhere whenever possible
  • Support ongoing revisions to the DC tool kit to “train the trainer” as a foundation for expansion of the DUDES Club model in other communities.
  • Plan meetings and community-based activities (i.e. presentations, workshops, retreats)
  • Work with DCS Program Assistant to organize travel itineraries for community-based activities outside of Vancouver.
  • Assist in development of the DCS including support improvement of the website, promotions and marketing materials and special events.
  • Be a focal point in communications with community groups, government agencies and non-profit organizations. Liaise with the Program Elders and the Program Leadership Team.
  • Assist in implementation of evaluation surveys and semi-structured focus groups for evaluation purposes.
  • Maintain a clear line of communication with team members, ensuring that any issues are promptly raised and resolved
  • Interact with the media and other communications outlets as required
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • The OW will not be supervising others; however, the expectation is that the OW will assume a key leadership role within the team.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work location is quite flexible. The OW will be permitted to work from home/ library/coffee shop/ DCS office, but will be expected to have a presence at:

  • The Vancouver DUDES Club Gatherings (Thursdays 4-6pm)
  • Occasional appearances at the weekly Think Tank meetings (Tuesdays 2-3pm);
  • Monthly DCS team meetings (Monthly on Mondays from 10-12);
  • Weekly DCS operational meetings (currently weekly on Mondays from 3-4 PM through Zoom).

The OW will also have relatively frequent (every 2 months) short-term (1-3 days) travel to communities in Northern BC.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cultural Knowledge, and ability to work cross-culturally
  • Significant life experience, allowing candidate to relate to DC participants in some way
  • Related degree, diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience (Social Work, Community Development, Public Health, Psychology, etc).
  • Experience working specifically with men, or openness to working with them
  • Experience working in community with community members, towards community-set goals
  • Experience working with funders and partners
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations and/or clients
